What is the Role?

As a Control Room Engineer within SSE Renewables, you’ll be responsible for real-time operational control of our Onshore Wind Fleet, based in our Renewables Operations Centre in Perth, Scotland.

As an experienced operator in our critical 24/7 operations centre, your focus will be to ensure safe, efficient and compliant operation of our generating Plant/Apparatus and associated High Voltage infrastructure. You will have a direct influence on asset integrity, safe execution of site operations, maximising generation and ensuring the best possible plant availability, whilst ensuring full contractual and regulatory compliance is adhered to.

Some of your main accountabilities will include:

  • Fleet monitoring in real-time, responding appropriately to Plant/Apparatus changes and alarms;
  • Mobilising resources as necessary where field responses are required, notifying or escalating to the business where required;
  • Operating Plant/Apparatus in line with regulations, safety rules, contracts and company procedures;
  • Ensuring Safety from the System is achieved and maintained with respect to work/maintenance;
  • Liaise with System, Transmission and Distribution Network Operators to receive/respond to instructions and safely perform operations across boundaries;
  • Managing real-time aspects of planned/unplanned outages with respect to planning and trading to ensure maximum value from our energy portfolio;
  • Assisting Control Room Technicians as required with their duties;
  • Assisting in the development of colleague competence through direct coaching and mentoring.
  • As this is a shift position there will be a requirement to work to a rota system, therefore, you should be flexible, located within 45 minutes commuting by car, and able to commit to a structured shift pattern contributing to 24-hour full year cover.

    What do I need?

    We are looking for an experienced control room operative who has held responsibilities aligned with those detailed above. You should be qualified to a minimum of HND level in an engineering discipline or have extensive relevant industry knowledge and experience.

    Due to the nature of the role, the successful candidate is required to have the following;

  • Experience of Electro-mechanical generating Plant/Apparatus, ideally within the Renewables sector;
  • Practical experience and strong knowledge of industry safety rules such as Wind Turbine Safety Rules and HV rulesets;
  • Strong IT and communication skills. Proficient in operating multiple software platforms including telephony and SCADA systems. Also, an aptitude to learn new systems promptly is essential;
  • Ability to adapt to changing workloads positively without compromising key responsibilities, to be flexible, highly motivated and have a genuine passion for the industry.
