Graduate Safety Advisor GB, Great Yarmouth & Little Barfor Permanent 01.10.2020

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

Reporting to the Senior Safety Advisor, the successful candidate will provide a flexible and responsive safety resource to support Great Yarmouth and Little Barford Power Station.

You will also, from time to time, support safety activities and initiatives across the UK Generation Business and also chip in to the maintenance of the Central Safety Management systems and associated documentation.

The post holder will be pivotal in developing the safety culture at site during normal operation and outages, such that engaging conversations become behavior driven rather than task driven. This will involve significant interaction with the incumbent workforce out on plant and in the workshop facilities.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Provision of Specialist Safety Advice and Mentorship and practical support to the Little Barford and Great Yarmouth management team, their staff and resident contractors where appropriate.

Provide additional practical safety to the day to day activities at Little Barford and Great Yarmouth Power Stations.

Encourage and develop a behavioural safety approach to improve the overall safety awareness within the staff and management team, encouraging safety discussions.

Support the production of a Safety Plan which reflects the overall objectives of Generation SE and the UK business, supervising and reporting on progress at the relevant forums within the organisation.

Provide expertise in accident / incident investigation in support of the line management teams undertaking the investigations. Communicate causes and lessons learnt to colleagues across the Generation SE business via corporate safety.

Close liaison with the Senior Safety Advisor other Generation UK Safety Advisors to ensure coordinated safety management approach across the business.

Encourage / support tool box talks, work place inspections, hazards observation and near miss reporting at the business units, driving Madison entries to a timely and accurate conclusion.

Champion the continuous improvement ethos of the Health & Safety Management

Ensure the documentation system is suitable and sufficient to deliver site activities and aligns with the Central Management and Compliance Documents; participate in audits as part of the overall Generation Safety Management Process.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

Provision of safety advice and mentorship – ensuring Management teams are aligned with their H & S obligations, including carrying out safety walks and engaging conversations.

Visibility and engagement with staff at all levels of the organisation at both locations.

Continuous Safety Improvement within the Business Units measured by leading and reactive measures. Ensure Mission Zero is embedded.

Promotion of Behavioural Safety – Safety understanding and active engagement in safety by all staff at Little Barford and Great Yarmouth, personally assisting and mentoring the location EOTB Ambassadors.

Compliance Documentation to reflect current legislative and regulatory mentorship and corporate safety timescales.

Problem solving/complexity

  • Investigations of accidents and incidents, identification of the root cause, recommendation and implementation of measures.
  • Understanding of H & S legislation and impact on business unit.
  • Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience of working as a Health and Safety professional in manufacturing or heavy industry is desirable.
  • NEBOSH Certificate in occupational Health and Safety eventually leading to NEBOSH Diploma.
  • Clear understanding of the CDM regs and application in the management of plant outages and major maintenance activities.
  • Investigative skills, for example Root Cause Analysis and HEART

  • Interpersonal skills and ability to interact with people at all levels of the organisation and external agencies
  • Sound understanding of current health and safety legislation applicable to heavy industry and to be able to apply it to the power generation business.
  • The ability to work to deadlines and produce high quality work in an empowered environment.
  • Ability to deliver presentations to staff and contractors to the organisation.
