JNCC’s strategy aims to incorporate the concepts of natural capital and ecosystem services into our evidence and advice, so that decisions take the value of nature into account and deliver optimal benefits for human wellbeing.

The aims of the marine Natural Capital group of the Marine Ecosystems Team are to:

  • develop ideas and approaches to improve sustainability and increase the benefits to society from marine Natural Capital assets
  • keep JNCC at the forefront of marine Natural Capital expertise in the UK
  • improve our international leadership
  • further embed Natural Capital approaches into our existing marine work
  • show and explain the value we receive from seas and oceans, to promote better stewardship and a transition to a more resilient system
  • To achieve these aims we need to make best use of all available evidence and develop trusted products, examples and narratives to promote more sustainable management.

    This role, leading on influencing and strategic collaborations, will work closely with a counterpart who will concentrate on building and using our technical evidence-base, to promote Natural Capital in policy, governance, funding and action. Collaborative working with other specialists from JNCC and our partners, including operational marine management staff and advisers, policy advisers, ecologists and economists, makes this a dynamic and exciting job.

    JNCC’s remit covers terrestrial, coastal and offshore habitats; the focus of this role is coastal and marine. The majority of the work is in the UK, but there is scope to contribute expertise as JNCC’s portfolio of international projects grows.

    Post Duties

  • Maintain strategic relationships and up-to-date knowledge of policy drivers related to marine natural capital and customers across the four UK countries
  • Work with the MNC Evidence specialist to identify solutions for more sustainable decision-making in the marine environment, based on integrating knowledge of ecosystem services and socio-economic evidence to inform choices; develop and deliver proposals
  • Lead on new and existing projects, such as case studies or proofs of concept, working collaboratively with various teams. This will include leading and contributing to bids for additional income to maintain and expand our work in this area.
  • Lead for JNCC as an advocate for marine Natural Capital within JNCC and with partners and customers, including:
  • o articulate the evidence and narratives to explain the benefits

    o drive dialogue to deepen our understanding of the opportunities and barriers

    o transmit the messages via meetings, groups, talks, training courses, presentations, reports, web material and other media

    Support the MNC Evidence specialist to develop our evidence base in line with strategic needs

    Responsibilities

    Technical

    To be a successful candidate you will be:

  • Educated to degree level in marine ecology, ecosystems and/or nature conservation
  • Experience

    To be a successful candidate you will have:

  • Experience of working on or with marine policy in the UK, and good understanding of the drivers of policy and the needs of those affected
  • Excellent writing skills, including experience of fact-finding and synthesis of complex information, identification of key messages, and graphic presentation, communicating complex concepts to non-technical audiences in simple, succinct, and easily accessible terms.
  • Proven ability to engage in constructive dialogue to influence people’s ideas and form working partnerships
  • Good understanding of the relationship between biodiversity, ecosystems, services, sustainable development and benefits to society
  • Willingness to adapt and learn, to achieve broad understanding of environmental economics, as applicable in ecological/environmental analysis based on ecosystem services and natural capital
  • Sound computer literacy skills, including use of spreadsheets, word processors, computer presentations and the internet.

    Leave entitlement

    JNCC annual leave allowance is 25 days per annum. After five years’ service, leave entitlement increases to 30 days per annum.

    In addition to annual leave, JNCC offers 12 public and privilege days per annum, three of which are explicitly reserved for office closure between Christmas and New Year.
